As the fall semester approaches, Sigma Alpha Delta, Baruch's oldest honor society, is hard at work to make sure it is an eventful one. In the past, Sigma Alpha Delta has sponsored a number of events ranging from graduate school information sessions to the annual New Candidates Dinner. This coming semester, several events are being planned that will be both beneficial and fun for the Baruch population.
One of the society's current plans is to invite the honor society's alumni back to the campus to give current Sigma members a chance to work with them. Many past members are now successfully employed and by working closely with them, students obtain a chance to network and also plan what courses they should take. With help from past and current members, the society hopes that students will have a better chance at moving forward.
"Our events are designed to follow the society's motto, ‘get yourself in a better place,'" said Dmitrijs Nahajs, chairman of events for Sigma Alpha Delta. "The opportunities we offer encourage students to design a set of objectives they need to accomplish while in school for a successful start in the careers they choose to pursue."
Another large-scaled event planned for the fall semester is the CEO on Campus, where the CEO of HSBC, Youssef A. Nasr, will be invited to come and speak with students about where he is now and how he got to his position. This is a great opportunity for students because as a major business institution many Baruch students intend to pursue lucrative careers for top companies. This event gives students a chance to set reasonable objectives and learn about possible methods to achieve them.
A tour of the Bloomberg Headquarters is yet another highly anticipated event Sigma Alpha Delta has in store. Students will get the chance to see how the company functions from the inside, what types of jobs are available, the atmosphere of the company, and also get the opportunity to find out what skills and qualities Bloomberg seeks in their employees. This tour will also provide students with a chance to network and possibly make contacts within the company.
Following the tour, Sigma Alpha Delta will have a human resources event with guest speakers from several different companies. The speakers will be from the fields of business and the liberal arts. Students will get the chance to learn more about various career opportunities, and the information provided will help them in choosing a major. In the past these events have been very informative and students have come away feeling more confident in their decisions.
Sigma Alpha Delta is also into providing students with fun and improving the connections between the various student clubs and organizations. The society hopes to host a physical endurance challenge, which will bring together Baruch students in good-natured fun, while at the same time reinforcing the idea of school spirit and community. Although the details of this challenge have not yet been finalized, there is sure to be an entertaining intellectual part, emphasizing fun and sticking with the society's motto.
Sigma Alpha Delta has been making a great effort in the past few semesters to provide Baruch students with opportunities that will help get them further in life and succeed in attaining both educational and career related goals.
