The Sigma Alpha Delta Honor Society has joined forces with Baruch’s literary giants, Encounters and Urban Writers Exchange, to launch a Baruch-wide poetry competition. This competition will give aspiring poets a chance to attain worthwhile recognition and win valuable prizes.

One of the most outstanding features of this competition is that it will culminate with a grand poetry reading on Thursday, March 17 at a venue to be announced. Three acclaimed poets will be invited to attend and share their work with the budding poets in Baruch. The writers of the top 12 poems in the competition will be given a chance to read their poems publicly.

Some of the most important guidelines for this competition are: All poems must be original; no poem that has been published will be considered for entry; poems may not promote racism, sexism or any form of hatred; poems must be free of obscenities and profanities; and poems must not exceed 30 lines.

Poems will be short-listed and the top 15 poems sent to a committee of experts, comprised primarily of Baruch Professors. The writers of the top three poems will be awarded prizes (including publication of their poems in Encounters). A thorough breakdown of the prizes will be announced later.

Sigma Alpha Delta has embarked on a program to promote the liberal arts side of Baruch. A semester ago they hosted the Oxford Debate, which was a resounding success.
