Baruch’s annual Relay for Life fundraising campaign began with a kick-off party on Thursday during club hours.

As part of The American Cancer Society’s newly adopted “birthday” theme, tables on the 2nd floor of the vertical campus featured a life-sized birthday cake, party hats, beads, and cupcakes to entice students to sign up and participate.

Students milled around the area talking to event coordinators about the fundraising effort and how they could get involved. Hunter College is also expected to host a kick-off rally, in conjoined efforts with Baruch, within the next week to help jumpstart the movement at their school.

“We are trying things that haven’t been done in the past years and hope to get everyone involved, while having fun and taking pride in the accomplishments,” said Elena Khvatskaya, an event chair coordinator for Relay for Life. “I strongly encourage people to find out more and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to make a concrete difference in a person’s life.”

Hosted by the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life is an overnight event offering entertainment, contests, and prizes in celebration and remembrance of those who are or have battled cancer and to those who helped in the previous months preparing for the occasion. Through the survivor’s lap, luminaria ceremony and the fight back ceremony, students have many opportunities to help keep the fight for a cancer free world alive.

This year’s event will take place on Friday, April 23 in Baruch’s gymnasium and last until 8 am the next morning.

Relay for Life is one of Baruch’s largest fundraising events and it continues to grow each year.

A combined total of over $300,000 has already been raised since Baruch first started six years ago. Brought to the school by Director of Student Life Carl Alyman, Relay for Life has helped students, professors, and people in general together to inspire to fight for a common cause.

Already teams have signed up to begin fundraising for this year, including Baruch’s undergraduate student government, Student Life, and other teams formed by students and faculty.
