Baruch's new state-of-the-art dorms

To meet growing demand for dormitory space, Baruch College has expanded its offerings with the development of a new, state-of-the-art housing complex located mere blocks from Central Park in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

“This is a residence hall for students looking for double and triple rooms only. Where you live while you’re in college can change your entire experience,” according to the student life mission statement. Students have the luxury of walking down the block to the #6 train and taking it a few stops to the new dorm locations.

The new acquisition is equipped with a concierge, a high tech gym, a laundry facility that texts you when your clothes are dry, and a lounge to study or relax with friends in. There are also accessibility reservations for those who require additional living assistance.

Baruch will share the dorms with NYU along with other schools around the city, creating a diverse social environment that will help students expand their personal networks outside of the school even while they are still in college.

Along with the close proximity to Central Park, the new dorms are also within walking distance of the Whitney Museum and several other cultural and social attractions.

Per semester, depending on living preferences, room and board at the new living space will cost anywhere from $5,500-5,700. That includes two or three bedrooms, a bathroom, a pre-furnished living quarter and a lounge area equipped with pool tables and football table as well as access to the above listed amenities. The building also features a communal kitchen area.

“I think it is a cool idea having new dorms located not too far from Baruch so students like myself that are prospective dorm residents have a safe place to stay in between classes where they can get away,” said Baruch student Elisabeta Carla when asked if she would be interested in living in the new dorms.

Most students interviewed by The Ticker think the addition of the residential dorm would be beneficial to the Baruch students, but the high cost of living in the new space is a deterrent.

Rent for the dorms is due upon receipt and can be paid at the same time as. There are also financial aid formalities allotted to those who qualify, including payment plans for individuals who need them.

Housing is only available to Baruch students for the Fall and Spring semesters; students will not be allowed to live in the space over the summer semester. The 97th street building houses over 1,100 students from colleges all over the city.

As Baruch continues to strengthen its academic edge, capital projects such as the completion of this new residence hall coupled with projects in the works around the school, such as the escalator restoration project, the Student Center Building proposal, the 25th Street Plaza Project, and the renovation of the building at 17 Lexington serve to keep the school competitively attractive to prospective students, helping the school maintain a sustainable edge over competing schools both in and out of the CUNY system.

Students will be allowed to begin moving in the new dorms for the upcoming fall semester, and despite the cost, space in these rooms - much the same as in the classrooms at Baruch - is sure to fill up fast.
