Editorial: NBA’s grammar needs work

Last week, New Baruch Alliance sent out a letter to club leaders asking for signatures for a petition to renovate the student club area.

According to the letter, the petition would be presented to the current interim president, Stan Altman. It outlined several changes: new seating and furniture, freshly painted walls, cable television, printing resources, and extra storage space. Though they may have meant well, NBA's intentions were rendered ineffective by the gross misspellings and grammatical errors in their letter.

The first sentence begins, "In behalf of New Baruch Alliance, I like to ask respectfully to collect signatures." Another sentence reads, "We already have started the effort to collect the signature from the club area; however, we like to accelerate process to make sure Dr. Altman initiates the renovation before new college president takes office for the next semester." These, and numerous other mistakes sprinkled throughout the letter were enough to dissuade anyone from thinking about supporting the cause.

Quite frankly, this letter should never have been approved. It is an embarrassment not only to the author, who has plans to run as president of next year's Undergraduate Student Government, but also to the entire party and, ultimately, USG, which is primarily made up of NBA members.

It is shocking to think that these people have been representing the student body and making negotiations on our behalf all year. Student government leaders represent some of the best and brightest minds of our school. If they can't write a grammatically correct letter, this doesn't say very much of them.

We cannot deny that this is a good cause, as the club area could use some extra resources. NBA must be congratulated for trying a new approach to an effort that the last few USG administrations have failed to pass. However, it would not be surprising if students refused to sign something so poorly written.

If they do succeed in getting enough signatures, we hope that someone with a better grasp of grammar will write the letter they send to the president's desk.

I believe that the article should be about the content of the letter not the grammar. It would have been more professional for the ticker to release an article about the petition to renovate the student club area more than writing an article about the writer. What is the priority focused on in Baruch journalism?

While the NBA president candidate sounds inadequate for the position, it is still wrong of The Ticker to publish such a biased and unprofessional article. As a clueless Freshman who wants to participate in the election, I (as well as many others I'm sure) would have preferred an article of substance--one that addresses the main problems of Baruch and how the all the parties plan to resolve such problems. Ticker journalists, less drama and more News please.

Well said, the old USG had class. This group just runs around the halls screaming like animals. Also, if he can't write/speak properly, how is he to represent us in front of administrators?

it's pretty pathetic how Ticker only write bashing articles about NBA yet fail to highlight anything negative of "Fix Baruch" or we should say "One Baruch" who were in office for 2 years and still failed to accomplished their current platform.

And Ticker should not be commenting on another person's grammar mistakes when their articles are less than perfect, even AFTER going through several edits. It's only because Ticker is affiliated with "FixBaruch" that they would write an article like this.

What exactly is the story here? A guy accidentally sends out a draft instead of the finished product and he gets crucified for that. I once did that for a class. It happens to everyone; we're all human after all.

does the ticker really have nothing to write about? why cant this writer find something more influential and important to write about? what about articles about the new school president or the problems that are still prominent in Haiti or better yet something that can engage our minds. The writer of this article not only made a fool of themselves but just lowered the standard of the ticker too. In the midst of trying to bash a student leader, the writer of this article instead made them self look bad and made apparent the level of the minds at ticker. good job. i'm embarrassed that you write about the news at baruch.

if you're going to make a big deal about petty things, don't write for the ticker, start a blog.

Dear Concerned Students, Anonymous People, and Casual Observers,

It is evident by the recent up-tick in responses to The Ticker articles, most of which include political commentary, are largely due to the upcoming campaign. This also indicates that the responses, most of which are anonymous hail from party members or supporters of either party. The attempts to lambaste each other are utterly despicable. If you have an opinion, perhaps, you should post your legitimate name. On the other hand, if you choose to be so egregious and odious, I would suggest that you contact Garam or a member of NBA directly; however, you're probably too indecent and lack the respectable candor to do so.

You see, regardless of party affiliations or political view points, we are all students of Baruch College. We should all want to see each other grow and improve, because each of us are a product of this institution. Each of us represents the quality of Baruch College. Each of you should understand that great percentage of Baruch students speak English as a secondary language. Now, I am not going to defend the grammatical errors in the recent memo; yes, it should have been revised by a second party and significant revisions could have been made. However, I will kindly ask each of you to understand the difficulties some individuals encounter with writing and to reconsider your harsh and inconsiderate comments.

I would also expect my good friend, Ben Guttmann, to also address these insensitive comments to uphold the integrity of his party, and to separate Fix Baruch from this nonsense. He is a gentleman of unrivaled character and should strongly oppose these insidious comments directed at his counterpart.

That is just plain sad. We cannot vote for this idiot as president of our student government. Baruch needs work. Having this guy take over the position would just throw all hope for Baruch into the gutter.

Garam is a cartoon. Has anyone ever talk to this kid? He has no idea what it means to be a student leader. This guy was in Fitz one night, and made a fool of himself laughing and talking out of his butt drunk. He doesn't know how to talk to people, and I don't know what makes him think that he is going to be a strong candidate for president. I thought NBA had a democratic way of choosing their leader, but it shows how blinded they are by the idiocracy of the "NBA movement."

Their name in it self is an error. They are the OLD BARUCH ALLIANCE, there's nothing new about them. Same old dirty politics as always. I hope Baruch students see through their act. As one commenter said, the petition should have came from USG, not NBA.

Please lets stop this stupidity! Atleast the old USG had some sort of class.

Could the The Ticker look into his accomplishments as a senator in the past year? I know for a fact that he hasn't accomplished anything big.

They're flaky, fake, phony, and apparently very dumb. There has to be some IQ requirement to be in student government.

I can't believe that he is actually running for a president. If the president is this smart and professional I don't even want to know what the rest is like. Oh man what a joke haha. I wonder if he keeps running after this.

hahaha

good! hopefully this will help to make people realize that they made a mistake last year. I hope someone runs against NBA. They really made a joke of themselves this year.

This NBA group keeps getting better and better don't they?

Last semester, they elected a "senator with an unethical past."
Last month, they ran out of money for club appeals.
Last week, they decided they are doing such a bang-up job that they deserve to spend $30,000 of our money to buy themselves new chairs.

And now this blatant political ploy. I know Garam from class last year, and this seems like the kind of stupid, petty thing he would do. This kid is more or less the definition of arrogant.

Most student governments are sleazy, but this group isn't even good at that.
