Baruch College has over the past three years experienced a dramatic increase in interest for international business, according to the department of marketing and international business' website. Companies now want to be recognized globally and have been sending their employees to their international firms.

According to the Vault Career Guide to International Careers (2004 edition) there are five common reasons to go abroad. These, along with your motivations, are:

Adventure and personal growth
Greater professional opportunities
Money
Cool resume credentials and long-term career goals
Language acquisition

Samplings of the types of expatriates (international workers) according to the same book are:

Corporate transfers
"Half-pats"
English teachers
Foreign service officers
Development workers
Entrepreneurs
Temporary and seasonal workers
Students

Guides on international careers can be found on Vault.com.

Some clubs on campus, such as AIESEC and Financiers Without Borders, provide opportunities to work/volunteer abroad. Other nonprofit organizations, such as the Peace Corps and Teach for America, also provide such opportunities. The Weissman Center for International Business is another resource as they offer the Global Student Certificate Program.

International business is a new major that will be available this fall at Baruch. It provides the chance to learn about business and experience in another country's culture. This major gives students a competitive advantage against other students by complementing it with a functional minor in either finance or marketing and a Tier III language minor. However, proving proficiency in a language will allow a student to be waived from this requirement.

When firms seek to place students in their company, they look at the concentration the student pursued. So before you declare this as your major, think about what minor will complement it. In addition to declaring your major, you must fill out an application to get accepted into the program. It is the only major that you must apply directly to in order to be accepted into the program.

The STARR Career Development Center in collaboration with the Weissman Center for International Business along with Golden Key International Honour Society is presenting a panel event about international business on Tuesday, May 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 14-270 of the Vertical Campus. The event will include a panel of professionals in the areas of finance, marketing, and consulting. Professor Clifford Wymbs, faculty advisor of the major and the deputy director of the Weissman Center for International Business, will also be available to answer questions in regards to any future opportunities such as work and study abroad options.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP on STARR Search at http://baruch-csm.symplicity.com/students.
