Hello Baruch College students, my name is Chris Catalano and I am the President of the Undergraduate Student Government for this upcoming year.

Last summer in The Ticker I was quoted as saying, “My only regret is not getting involved earlier.” One year later, I still have that same regret, but instead of harping on the fact that campus life here may not be a hotbed for social activity, I ran for president. Now I can say that joining the Undergraduate Student Government at Baruch College has been one of the best decisions that I’ve made. By getting involved you will see a different side of Baruch. The sheer energy and passion that exudes from the clubs and organizations is inspiring and truly motivates me every day.

New students, there is something you should learn very quickly at Baruch, no one is going to hold your hand and coddle you. You must be the one to take the initiative to get involved on campus. Baruch can be quite an overwhelming place, but do not be afraid. Put yourself out there and you will be amazed at what a great college you attend.

It is my job as president to try to reach every student and help them to see the wonders of Baruch College but quite frankly I cannot personally reach out to 14,000 students every day. This is why the Undergraduate Student Government consists of dozens of individuals committed to the same goal, to serve the student body.

We also understand that Baruch is a commuter school, but this does not mean you should not be able to take part in “the college experience.” If you are spending your time in college and not having fun, you’re doing it wrong. When you look back on your time at Baruch you should be proud of what you’ve done and had fun doing it.

The bonds you create in college most likely will be the bonds that will last the longest. You may be sitting in class next to someone that will eventually become your business partner or you may pass someone in the hall that may be your running mate in your quest for political office.

Personally, I can tell you that the people I’ve met at Thursday night parties or during a Senior Semester Bar Night have been some of the most interesting and incredible people that I am now glad to call my friends. I am so excited to lead an incredible and motivated team and to have a fun and successful year.

 The next few years will be the best of your life, remember that.If you’re not having the time of your life, improve your situation and get involved. If you want to get involved but don’t know how, come talk to me in the USG Suite (Room 3-270) about different organizations, teams, and the student government.

We are students, just like you, and we want you to have as much fun at Baruch as we have and plan on having this upcoming school year. I invite you to join me and have the best year that Baruch has ever experienced.
