Dollars & Sense has recently been named one of the best college magazines in the country by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and has been given a Silver Crown award for its 2007 issue. Starting in the fall 2008 semester, all bathrooms in the Newman Vertical Campus and the Library Building will have new, energy efficient faucets, according to Jim Lloyd, assistant vice president of campus operations. The faucets that are a major source of complaints from the faculty, staff and student body will be replaced with a newer model that automatically shuts off. (0) comments
In fall of 2008, Baruch College will be initiating a program to detect early warning signals that students may be having difficulties. A new and improved game room supported by administrative funding may be on the way for the Baruch community. Anthony Hernandez, president of USG, had stated after their meeting on Tuesday, March 25 that within the next week, USG will meet with Ben Corpus, vice president of Student Development, and begin the process of constructing the room. While there is a consensus among the clubs and the student body that the Office of Student Life (OSL) is inefficient, there is a different consensus among the administration and Undergraduate Student Government. As of March 16, Baruch College officially acquired $50 million in funding for the renovation of the 17 Lexington Ave. building. In the previous issue of The Ticker, Chancellor Matthew Goldstein's dedication of $30 million for the future of 17 Lexington was announced. (0) comments
Baruch College's Newman Library was packed on Tuesday, March 18, for U.S. Poet Laureate Charles Simic. Simic, a guest professor for the Sidney Harman Writer-in-Residence program took to the podium to read and discuss his work; all while his dry wit and slight Slavic accent shined through. (0) comments
In honor of women's history month, a wellness seminar for Women was held on March 27, which was brought to Baruch by the Women of Color Network. The seminar, coordinated by Professor Bobbie Pollard, was centered around a speech given by Dr. Indrani Maity, a certified naturopath, clinical nutritionist, and an ayurvedic practitioner. On Sunday, March 16, China blocked its Internet users from accessing YouTube.com after videos of the protests in Tibet were found on the site. This is being seen as another move by the Chinese government to exert control over the public's observation of the unrest in Tibet. (7) comments
