The Baruch men’s tennis team return victorious after defeating CCNY, 5-0, in the CUNYAC Quarterfinal round played on Wednesday night at the USTA Billie Jean King U.S. National Tennis Center in Queens, New York. The match came to an early close as the Bearcats swept their opponents in five matches.
Team captain and senior Stephan Muller and junior Chris Jenkins maintained their undefeated streak against CCNY at second singles, which put them at 8-0 this season to go 14-0 in the flight. “We went in expecting a pretty easy match,” said Muller. “Even though I don’t like underestimating opponents, we didn’t lose a game during our regular season match against them and so it was a straight forward win today as well.”
Head coach Florin Giuglescu was very pleased with the team’s performance against CCNY. “It was an excellent match. I am so happy this team came together when we needed it,” he said.
In doubles competition, Muller & Jenkins, Artem Gorbachevskiy & Guy Gorren, and Joe Laskowski & Philip Bleustein, all defeated their opponents with an 8-0 sweep.
The team seeding based on CUNYAC record puts Baruch at number 1 this season with an overall season record of 13-2.
Come Sunday, the Bearcats will square off against the College of Staten Island in the semifinal match. “Staten Island has given us some trouble at certain positions during our regular season but we’re ready,” said Muller. “They’ve got some good players but they won’t be able to deal with the depth of our team.”
Coach Giuglescu believes his team is destined to go far this postseason. “You always have to be prepared and ready,” he said. “the performance of my team this year is up to expectations but I always keep my eyes toward how far we can go nationally - to me this is the ultimate goal!”
The Bearcats have swept all awards on their way to the Semifinal game. Guy Goren has been named the CUNY Player of the Year, Joe Laskowski has been named the CUNY Rookie Player of the Year, Chris Jenkins and Stephan Muller have been named the 1st Team All American and Phillip Bleustein the 2nd Team, and finally Coach Giuglescu has been named the Tennis Coach of the Year.
The Bearcats have two remaining games to play. The Semifinal game was not completed in time for this edition of the Ticker. If Baruch wins they will play in the final on Thursday, May 3rd.
