It was a tough road loss for Women's basketball last Monday Jan 30 in Newburgh, NY. The Bearcats never got their offense going and they ended up losing by a score of 63-45 to Mount St. Mary.
After the game head coach Machli Joseph did not try to deflect any criticism of his own team's performance while still praising St. Mary for their strong showing, "I give credit to MSM College for playing very good defense but we missed a lot of open shots," he said.
The Bearcats only made 18 out of 60 field goals and their shooting percentage from the field was 30 percent.
Nevertheless these numbers were inflated because of a much better second half showing. Baruch had a disastrous first half, which saw them fall behind by 17 points at half time by a score of 16-33.
In the second half the Bearcats increased their shooting percentage to 37 percent and put up 29 points on the board, almost twice as many as they had in the first half.
Coach Joseph stressed that the season is still young and that the team is a work in progress that will only get better as the season goes along.
"We haven't peaked yet and still striving to play the type of game we are capable of. We are working hard every day to get on track for the playoffs and hope to peak by the end of Feb," he said.
The loss ended Baruch's three-game winning streak in which they averaged 96 points but Joseph made it clear that these teams could not be compared:
"MSM is just 100 percent a better team, one of the top teams in the Atlantic region and you can't compare them to York and Medgar who have 2 wins between them." Baruch beat these two teams 105-47 and 107-34 respectively.
Freshman Iyana Abrams led the Bearcats in points with 11. She was the only Baruch player who reached double digits.
Baruch is now looking forward to the Battle of Lexington but Joseph claims his team is not doing any special preparation for this particular game.
"Nothing special for the Battle, again, just striving to be playing our best basketball this month. It's about being confident and believing that we will play our best peaking now so we can make a run and win the conference tournament."
The Battle of Lexington will be held Thursday this week at 5:30 p.m versus John Jay.
It is one of several important CUNYAC conference games coming up in the following weeks along with home games against CCNY on Monday Feb 6 and Hunter on Saturday Feb 11.
